The south-eastern part of the Island of Mljet has been proclaimed as protected important landscape of Saplunara, and it helped to preserve the untouched nature with endemic plants, as well as with autochthonous pine woods. At he beginning of 1960-ies, the north-western part of the Island of Mljet has been proclaimed as the National Park Mljet, with its two salty lakes and Benedictine monastery of St. Mary, placed at the island in a big lake.
